Founded all the way back in 1846, the Dorset County Museum is a sterling starting point for all intrigued travellers. Housed in a charming neo-gothic building in Dorchester, the museum has a series of galleries exploring aspects of Dorset's past. Lovers of literature will find plenty to get stuck into here. Indeed, the museum has the largest Thomas Hardy in the world, most of it bequeathed by the author's second wife, Florence. Visitors can also savour sections on wildlife, archaeology, art and agriculture.
