Sherborne Abbey is a quintessentially English building in a quintessentially English town. Technically it's no longer an Abbey as such, as the Benedictine monks were booted out by King Henry VIII. Such was the fate of countless monasteries across the land. However, the villagers prevented the King from taking his booty, buying back the Abbey as their parish church. The delicate fan-vaulting is a sublime sight to behold, and there are many other splendid features to savour. Music lovers are in luck as there are regular concerts, with many distinguished choirs leading the song.
