Getting around Dorset

By car

If you really want to do Dorset justice, having your own set of wheels will make all the difference. Of course, it would be nice to be driven around the county in a vintage Rolls Royce by an ace butler/driver, but unless you're David Beckham, that's probably not on the cards. So renting a car is your next best bet. It's only by getting off the established trails that you'll get a feel for the real Dorset. Having a car will allow you to travel according to your own time schedule.

By public transport

Provided you're intending to visit just one or two major destinations, public transport may well be all you need. Major destinations such as Shaftesbury and Weymouth are well-served by bus and train connections. And as it goes, even the humblest hamlets usually have some kind of bus link with the world at large. English trains and buses are generally of a high standard. However, if you're planning to visit dozens of villages and towns over a short number of days, you may find that relying on public transport is a frustrating, unless a) you are addicted to comparing timetables or b) you don't mind getting marooned every once in a while.

By taxi

In an emergency, a taxi could win the day. But for day to day travel, this mode of transport will burn a big hole in your pocket.
